The decision paralysis before your first dance class is incredibly real! The question of what to wear to a hip-hop class is one of the most common searches made by new students, as well as parents prepping their kids. Hip-hop definitely has its own distinct aesthetic, but the golden rule is always the same: comfort and freedom of movement.

The ideal outfit for a hip-hop dance class

To execute the moves correctly and really feel the groove, forget about tight clothing. Instead, opt for:

  • Tops: Baggy or oversized t-shirts, hoodies, or comfortable tank/crop tops.
  • Bottoms: Comfortable tracksuits (sweatpants), cargo pants, or loose shorts. We highly prefer loose lines and recommend avoiding tight leggings, as they restrict the low stance and the characteristic "bounce" (the rhythmic up-and-down movement) of hip-hop.
  • Shoes: Flat-soled sneakers (like Air Forces, Vans, or classic skate/athletic shoes) with a clean sole that offer good ankle support.

Why does the right outfit affect your dancing?

In hip-hop, baggy clothes aren't just a fashion statement (even though they make you look extra cool). They visually amplify the movement, emphasizing the flow and overall style of the choreography.
